When Gizos went back to California, I stopped going to AA for about two weeks, and of all the people to get on my back about it and to worry, it was Bobby. I started to have these strange existential thoughts, like I wasn’t really real. It’s hard to explain exactly, because I knew I was real, but I didn’t feel it. It was like my spirit did not match my body, as if my body were where it should be but my invisible innards were not. I could not for the life of me reconcile my existence.

And I did fear these strange feelings would take Elizabeth should she learn of her blood, learn that she had a secret part in her and that, in this world, that part might erase another. But she needed to know that her blood was her blood. Nothing could take that away, and nothing could even come close to capturing it, especially not percentages on pieces of paper. Because we’re more than that. Or at least she was—she’d got it in her, that connection to a past time and people, no matter what anybody said.

It’s not always funny what wins in the end.
